January = Cervical Awareness Month

January is cervical health awareness month. It is a month to remember how women can protect themselves from the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer. HPV is a virus spread through sexual activity and is a leading cause of cervical cancer.
Annually, 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer (The National Cervical Cancer Coalition [NCCC], 2017). However, HPV, the virus that often causes cervical cancer, is preventable with vaccination and screening (including pap and HPV testing).
You may think, “How can I help with any of this?” There are actually a few things you can do:
1. Encourage women to visit a gynecologist this year.
2. Let women know that insurance plans cover most gynecologist visits and cervical cancer screening (depending on insurance, some may get services at no charge).
3. Talk to parents about the importance of getting their pre-teens and teens, both boys and girls, to get the HPV vaccine.

National Health Education Week

This past week, ESG celebrated National Health Education Week. Each day represented a different partnership:

Monday October 17: Community Health, Health Inequities, and Faith-based Partnerships
Tuesday October 18: Worksite Health Partnerships
Wednesday October 19: School Health Partnerships
Thursday October 20: Government Organizational Partnerships
Friday October 21: Academic Partnerships

ESG is a proud supporter of SOPHE and a strong advocate for health partnerships! Programs and projects can be done on your own, but with the help of another, those projects and programs are much more abundant and effective. Thanks to our partners: Partners for Affordable Housing, YWCA Mankato, Minnesota State University Mankato Health Science Department, Faculty and professors of Community Health, YMCA Mankato, LEEP of Mankato, University of Wisconsin La Crosse Beta Phi Chapter, and Salvation Army of Rochester, Minnesota. Thank you to our partners for all your support and kindness! #NHEW2016

Welcome and Hello!

Hello everyone.

ESG has kicked off the 2016 Fall semester. We have already participated in multiple volunteer opportunities such as helping freshmen move in in late August as Move-In Crew. Another neat opportunity we had the chance to help out at was helping the Salvation Army South Store in Rochester, Minnesota re-paint some of their walls. Our chapter collaborated with the La Crosse, Wisconsin chapter to put this event on. It was a great experience and everyone had a good time getting to know each chapter better as well as volunteering and helping the Salvation Army out.

Events that are coming up include the Initiation Ceremony, which will be held on Sunday September 25. This semester we have 15 new members! It's a record! ESG is proud to announce that there are currently 30 members for Fall 2016. Another event coming up is our first social which will take place at Buffalo Wild Wings on Tuesday the 27. We are excited to get to know one another better and network. Yet another event coming up is our first fundraiser of the semester. It will take place on Wednesday September 28 from 10am to 2pm in the CSU Mall outside. We will be selling baked goods and protein bombs. Please do stop by and help us fundraise! All proceeds will go towards helping students go to the SOPHE conference come spring 2017. We would like to support as many students as possible in going because it is a great way to network with public health officials as well as building professional development. It would be wonderful to have a presence represent the Beta Kappa chapter of MSU.

ESG is excited to work with exceptional students this year. Can't wait to see what the year holds for this chapter!

All the best,

MSU ESG

Hello everybody,

At todays meeting a lot of different things were discussed!

First off, past meetings haven't necessarily been required, but were recommended to attend. Now, we are requiring members to attend at least 4/5 of the meetings left this semester. We feel as if it is very important and beneficial for all members to attend.

Next, we have numerous events coming up:

Homecoming Parade (Saturday, September 28, 10 am - 1 pm): We will be walking with the Health Science department and will be wearing matching health science shirts. We will be tie-dying the shirts sometime next week so if you would like to participate in the parade please let us know your shirt size by this FRIDAY! We will then let you know when we are tie-dying.

House Party (Thursday, October 17, 7 pm- 10 pm)

Mankato Marathon (Sunday October 20, 8 am - 12 pm)

Rake the Town (Saturday, October 26, 8 am - 12 pm)

Last, we will be meeting as a group at Applebees next Wednesday to get to know each other better! We want this to be a fun year for everyone.

Have a great few weeks!

First Meeting of 2013-2014 School Year

Welcome back everyone!

At our first meeting (September 3rd,2013) of the school year we talked about many different things. For starters, we introduced all of the new board members, as well as all of the club members. We also played a fun "get to know you" game.

We then discussed making a roster with everyones name and phone number on the list, that way if any members need to get in contact with each other everyone will have that information. We also talked about recruiting, like going into classes and dorms, hoping to get more members.

At the meeting we brought up how we would like the members to know each other better this year, as opposed to previous years where everyone barley knew each others names. So, we talked about possibly having a get together at Applebees or something like that.

We then discussed the different volunteer opportunities coming up, like house party, the Mankato Marathon, setting up lights in Sibley park, and other things like that. Many of these things will be discussed at the next meeting, especially house party since that is coming up quickly.

Overall it was a great first meeting, and we can't wait to get this year started! The next meeting will be September 17th, 2013 at 4:15pm in CSU 202. Hope to see you all there!

Wednesday, February 13th is the Safer Sex Carnival.  We will have a stand set up in the CSU with the games Show What You Know and a Condom Competition.  If you are willing to help with this, you can email us to sign up to help anytime between 10 am to 2 pm.

Meeting 10/30/12

Hey everyone!

Just as a reminder, the Allied Health and Diversity Fair is Monday, November 12th from 11:30 to 1.  This will be held in CSU 253/4/5.  Anyone interested in tabeling for this is welcome to come at any time!

We have heard about another volunteer opportunity that is available for more hours.  It is called Mavs Give Back and is being held on November 10th at 8 am.  This would consist of different volunteer projects around the community such as raking leaves, painting buildings, or picking up trash.  Registration for this is the morning of the event in the Shelberg Gym in Highland.

There is also another upcoming opportunity for hours that would also be used as fundraising for ESG. Kwianas is looking for volunteers to help them set up holiday decorations.  This would take place from 8 am to 5 pm November 17th and 18th.  We would choose either the morning or afternoon shift on one of the days depending upon what works best for most people.  Let us know what you think!

We also went over clothing orders today at the meeting.  We plan on ordering a baseball t and a half-zip sweatshirt.  We will be sending out an email this week with more information, so be watching for that.

Don't forget to like our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/mnsuesg

The next meeting will be November 13th at 5 pm in CSU 202.

Hope everyone has a great halloween!

Meeting on October 30th

Our meeting for October 30th has changed locations. We will be meeting at 5:00 pm in CSU 256.

We have been asked to be a part of a video entitled "101 Ways to Reduce Stress". At the meeting on October 30th, a grad student from Student Health Services will be coming and asking us to each think of a way we like to reduce stress. We will then be making a poster with our stress reliever and be taking our picture with the sign. Student Health Services will then be making a video with our pictures.

This is a great way for ESG to help in Health Science field and help students around campus! Be thinking of a good stress reliever to use as an example!

Rake the Town 2012

Tomorrow is Rake the Town in Mankato and North Mankato! We will be meeting at the Free Lot by Kwik Trip at 8:30 am. We have been assigned to rake 2 houses and after we are done we will be heading to Rake the Town headquarters for lunch and prizes! Remember to dress warm and get ready for some hard work!

The Mankato Marathon was switched to this Sunday the 21st instead of Saturday.  If  you signed up to help, check your email for your assignment.  If anyone has any conflict with this new time just let us know. :)

10/2/12 Meeting

Hi ESG members! Here is what we discussed at tonight's meeting:

To start off the meeting, we had a speaker come in from MSSA.  This is a student government group on campus.  They currently have two openings for senate members from the college of allied health and nursing.  This organization is working on projects like improving campus dining services and remodeling the first floor of the library.  If anyone is interested in joining, they can contact Daphne Drossart at daphne.drossart@mnsu.edu.

We went on to talk about and sign up for a variety of upcoming volunteer opportunities.  To start with, House Party is October 18th from 7pm to 10pm.  We are hoping to act out our own scene at this event.   If you are interested in helping, email us with your name and t-shirt size!

Next is the Mankato Marathon.  This is taking place on Saturday, October 20th.  It will involve a few hours in the morning, but we are not exactly sure on the times yet.  Let us know if you are interested.

Rake the town is Saturday, October 27th.  This also will be a morning event.  We are signed up to rake two houses. Send us an email if you would like to join.

Finally, the Allied Health and Diversity Fair is  Monday November 12th from 11:30 to 1 in the CSU.  All are welcome to sign up.

We are still looking for a volunteer to redo the bulletin board.  All that this would involve would be to change the dates and hang some pictures.  This would be an easy hour!

Next meeting: October 16 at 5 pm in CSU 202. Hope to see you all there!

Information Meeting 9/18/12

Hello everyone!

This week we had our informational meeting for students who may be interested in joining.  We had a really great turnout at this meeting! We just went over the basics about ESG: the motto, membership requirements, and some of the events we participate in throughout the year.  We hope it was helpful to all new members!  If anyone has any extra questions don’t be afraid to ask.

If anyone is interested in getting started on some hours for the semester, we will be doing some tabling at the RSO fair on Monday from 11-3.  Anyone is welcome to stop by and help, whether it be for an hour or the entire time.

That is all for this week!

ESG Meeting 9/4/12

Welcome back everyone! Hope the first few weeks of school are going well.
To start, we are looking for volunteers to go into classrooms and recruit students to join ESG. We have a list of classes prepared that would be good to go to and talk. Also, we have already written a script up if anyone is interested in doing this. You can make up a script of your own as well if you would like.

We have a few events in mind for this semester. Thursday October 18th is the mock House Party from 8:30 to 10:30 pm. ESG would like to act out a scene at this event if we get enough volunteers. The Mankato Marathon is October 20-21st and Rake the Town is Saturday, October 27th. We will have more details on these events later. For now, just mark them on your calenders!
We also briefly went over clothing options at the first meeting. We seemed to find that most people wanted to order T-shirts this year. Any other opinions on this?? Would you be interested in ordering one? Just let us know what you are all thinking!
Lastly, if you did not get an email about the first meeting but still want to be a member of ESG, please email Audra at audra.marvin@mnsu.edu with your contact information. Our next meeting will be Tuesday October 2nd at 5:00 pm is CSU 202.
That is all for now!
